The Benefits Of Infant Massage

As most adults, I enjoy a good massage and I enjoying giving a massage. It seems babies enjoy massages as well. Even though infant massage is rather new to the West, it has been done in places like India, Asia and the Pacific for centuries. It was introduced to the West in the late 1970s and came to the US in 1978 by way of a yoga practitioner named Vimala Schneider McClure.

Since touch is an important part of bonding, massage communicates nurturing, love and reassurance for your baby. Not only does it help our baby feel loved, it provides so much more:

1. It helps your baby to relax.
2. Promotes more restful sleep and healthy weight gain.
3. Helps relieve pain from colic, gas and teething.
4. Enhances sensory awareness.

That is just a few of the benefits your baby receives from infant massage. Another perk of massage is that it benefits parents as well:

1. Gives parents more confidence in handling their baby.
2. Gives parents an effective way to settle down a fussy baby.
3. Provides another way for the parent to bond with their baby.
4. Gives parents a way to introduce a sibling to the new baby.

When you are ready to give your baby a massage, just make sure you have plenty of time and a quiet place where you will not be interrupted. Your baby should not be hungry or too full. The room should be warm (depending on how warm, you may want to keep a blanket handy) and without drafts. Lay your baby down on the floor or bed on a soft blanket or towel with or without a diaper. Play soft music, talk or sing to your baby while you gently massage their body. You can use oils or lotions, but make sure if you use oil that it is not nut-based, like peanut and almond, to avoid the risk of allergic reactions.

As your baby gets older, you can still offer massages. My son likes for me to rub his back when he’s laying down with me. If you haven’t tried it, there is no better time than now. Your baby will appreciate it and so will you.
