The Basics Of Japanese Massage

Over the years many different schools of massage have developed, each one displaying a variety of techniques to help people to relax, feel better, and live healthier. At the same time, an interest in medical techniques and theories from Asia has developed in the United States. Because of this, people are giving Chinese and Japanese massage techniques a try. Japanese massage incorporates theories about pressure points and the way energy flows through the body, and uses these ideas along with massage techniques in a philosophy of preventative medicine.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is perhaps one of the newest forms of Japanese massage, originating in the early 1900s and born out of older techniques. While other massage techniques might use the forearms, elbows, and even the feet to accomplish various healing and relaxing motions on a patient, Shiatsu massage involves techniques using only the fingers and the palm of the hand.

A skilled practitioner of Shiatsu massage can not only relax someone, but can use his sense of touch to explore a person's body and find the points that need treatment the most. Like many Japanese massage and medical techniques, the theory behind Shiatsu massage is to help stimulate the body's natural immune response and ability to relax as a means of preventative medicine.

Nihon Kaifuku Anma

Shiatsu is actually a subset of a larger range of Japanese massage techniques known as Nihon Kaifuku Anma. This form of massage came to Japan over 1300 years ago, and had already been practiced in China for years prior to this.

This Japanese massage school works with deep tissue massage that is based on kneading motions. Unlike Western massage techniques, this Japanese massage technique is performed without the use of massage oils to reduce friction. Two techniques are unique to Anma, and these include kneading the body and the use of percussive techniques, which work by gently striking areas of the body.

The theory behind Anma massage is that the body's energy flows along particular pathways, and stimulating certain areas will influence the workings of the body's organs, leading to greater overall health. These concepts are similar to those used in acupuncture and other Eastern medicines. The purpose of Japanese massage is to help improve the way the body functions before problems show up, not after. This is a common feature in Japanese massage, whether the techniques originated thousands of years ago or merely one hundred years ago. If you want to try preventative medicine with a long history of success and many devotees, give Japanese massage a try.

Massage Therapy Degrees For A Brighter Future

The art of massage therapy is being used more often by today's medical practitioners who understand the benefits of human therapeutic touch. This increased acceptance has created a growing need for massage therapy degree programs. While an entry-level massage course may last between 6-9 months, a college-level massage therapy degree program can take 2 to 4 years to complete.

If you intend to become a certified or licensed massage therapist, it is vital that you gain some degree of formal training. Massage certificates and diplomas are offered at many trade schools and vocational schools, while massage therapy degrees are usually provided by a massage college or natural healing institute. A certificate or diploma in massage therapy is fine for most entry-level positions; but, if you intend to work in a medical or clinical setting, a college degree in natural healing will significantly enhance employment potential. There are hundreds of massage therapy schools across the U.S. and Canada, and each one will offer its own unique curriculum. This is why it is important to choose carefully to be sure the massage therapy training you receive will meet your individual goals.

You can find massage therapy degrees offered at the Associate level and at the Bachelor level, depending on the specific school. An associate degree will take approximately two years to complete, while a bachelor degree in natural healing can take up to four years. The course can cover many of the hundreds of massage methods and styles used in today's massage practices. You will most likely gain experience that can range from sports massage to reflexology to medical massage and more. Your college degree in massage therapy will prove to a potential employer that you are an expert in providing natural and non-invasive treatments to help clients experience a sense of wellbeing and overall general health.

Your massage therapy training will include lots of opportunities to practice hands-on basic massage techniques under the supervision of a massage professional. Most massage schools will include classes in massage theory and techniques, pathology, palpation, musculoskeletal treatments, anatomy and physiology, aromatherapy, kinesiology, clinical and case studies, and more. You will perform the various styles of massage in a clinical setting, such as deep tissue, Swedish and Shiatsu. Your massage training may cover related fields of study, such as acupuncture programs or chiropractic studies, for instance.

If you are still not sure if a massage therapy degree is right for you, please visit our website to learn more. You can review hundreds of massage therapy schools that are eager to train you for a bright future in natural healing.

Why Teach Infant Massage

What is a Certified Infant Massage Instructor?

A Certified Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI®) is a parent educator who teaches the healing art of infant massage to parents or caregivers in the presence of their babies. You do not need to have any previous experience in the healthcare field, or be a massage therapist, to become certified to teach infant massage.

Certification qualifies the CIMI® to demonstrate knowledge and skill in guiding parents and families in the practical application of infant massage. Certified Infant Massage Instructors (CIMI®) teach parents & caregivers how to massage their children in group and private classes. Instructors do not directly massage babies, but rather use baby dolls to demonstrate infant massage strokes.

Why Become Certified to Teach Infant Massage?

Infant Massage Instructors care deeply about families and children. By becoming certified to teach infant massage you become a healthcare professional who can provide quality parent education classes. Classes can be offered one on one for families in the privacy of their home or you might wish to offer your course at a community center, local hospital, or family center.

As a Certified Infant Massage Instructor you have the privilege and opportunity to impact a child and their family for a lifetime. Benefits of infant massage have long been known to include healthy growth and development, enhanced bonding and attachment, and improved sleep for child and parent. But as a CIMI® you receive direct benefits as well. There is an enormous amount of satisfaction received during an infant massage class while watching the interaction between caregiver and child. Or having a family return to your class, and hearing how well their baby slept through the night and their crying was reduced, will help you recognize the huge impact you have made on the health of the baby and their family.

And aside from just the wonderful benefits for both you and those you educate, imagine the financial satisfaction of becoming a trained professional working within the healthcare field. Infant Massage Instructors have the luxury of creating their own schedule, place of business and individual fee they charge for classes.

How to Become a Certified Infant Massage Instructor

First things first, contact a qualified trainer and register for a Certified Infant Massage Instructor Course. A certified trainer teaches a professional certification training for those interested in working with families by becoming a Certified Infant Massage Instructor

This course includes a Certified Infant Massage Instructor Manual and up-to-date course materials. The student will experience a supervised parent-baby class, and your Trainer, is committed to the certification process of each student. This is not a hands-on-baby course. Trainers, Instructors & Students use baby dolls to practice & demonstrate strokes.

Massage Colleges

While there are scores of massage colleges and schools, curriculums vary, as do total hours necessary for course completion. A number of massage therapy schools may offer minimally-required certificate and/or diploma program hours of instruction; however, there are a few massage colleges that provide extensive, hands-on training that may involve 1,000 class hours and more.

Because there are virtually hundreds of individual massage modalities, it is wise for prospective students to carefully review massage colleges so that they can determine whether or not the specific academic program is right for them. In many cases, massage therapy schools and colleges provide at least 2-3 different styles of bodywork, but may offer many more therapeutic healing art disciplines as well.

Basic massage college courses are regularly comprised of Swedish Massage, Sports Massage and Deep Tissue Massage, and may be supported by general education curriculums in human sciences (anatomy and physiology), business, career development and work ethics, psychology, and other associated topics of study.

Elective or supplementary massage college studies may include practical training in aromatherapy, acupressure, canine and/or equine massage, chair massage, geriatric massage therapy, infant massage, kinesiology, lymphatic drainage massage, medical massage, orthopedic massage, prenatal and postpartum massage, reflexology, and Shiatsu - to list just a few.

Furthermore, massage colleges and schools usually provide internship programs for students so that they may gain practical client experience. Internship setting may vary, but are often comprised of community hospitals, medical centers, stadiums, veterinarian offices, assisted living centers and other geriatric care facilities, family medical practices, sports clinics, and home hospice care.

In general, students that successfully complete a massage college course of at least 500 hours* may earn their certificate or diploma of completion, and may become nationally certified through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. In addition, massage colleges frequently offer continuing education courses that may be taken onsite, through home-study courses, and through distance learning programs as well.

As an added incentive, massage colleges and schools usually afford students with opportunities to participate in both full and part time courses, and may even offer day, evening, and weekend classes, too.

If you are interested in learning more about massage colleges, schools, and universities, please search our site for more in-depth information and resources.

*500 hours may be required to sit for the NCBTMB certification exam, depending on individual State regulations and guidelines.

A Career in Massage Therapy

Every day, a person must deal with the pressure of his job, family, children, traffic, mortgage or rent. The world can be extremely stressful. Because of this, many people are plagued with back tension, tight shoulders, exhausted lower backs and sore necks.

Massage therapists work to help a person get rid of pain and tension, recover from illness or injuries and reduce stress. The modern field of massage therapy is now dramatically expanding.

As a Massage Therapist, you can help others overcome chronic pain, recover from injuries and illness, reduce stress, and just plain help them feel better. Massage therapists can obtain employment almost anywhere - spas, physician's offices, health clubs, even vacation resorts.

1. Would You Enjoy a Career in Massage Therapy?

  • Do you enjoy working with people?

  • Do you love helping and caring for others?

  • Can you socialize with others, while also knowing when to remain silent in the presence of certain clients?

  • Can you work independently?

  • Are you empathetic?

  • Do you possess strong communication skills?

2. How to Obtain an Education in Massage Therapy

Massage therapists are trained in the basics of massage. They become familiar with trigger point therapy, deep tissue massage and Swedish massage. Today, there are many new emerging areas of massage therapy. Examples of these are Myofascial, pregnancy massage, animal massage and medical massage.

Many schools now offer massage therapy programs. One can choose to attend a certificate degree, which may only take two years. Students can also pursue a four year education degree. To find the college, vocational school or training center that best suits you, look in your local phonebook or do some research on the Internet. Many online courses can teach you the basics of your field and then allow you to visit the school periodically for hands-on training. Most education centers offer weekend and evening classes for parents who have children or for those who already possess a full-time job.

It is important that you do not apply to the first school that offers a massage therapy training program. Look at several different schools or colleges, their individual class schedules, course curriculum, instructor credentials and hands-on training. You should also ensure that the training classes or school meets the basic standards for employment in the massage therapy industry.

3. Gain Some Experience

Once you begin to engage in massage therapy education, it is essential that you obtain some practice. You can volunteer your services on a one-time basis to clients. You can also give free massages to friends and families or offer your services to community organizations in your city or town. You can begin to build a client base even before you finish your schooling.

4. Seek Employment

The massage therapy industry is continuously looking for new therapists. Health care clinics, spas and medical offices are ideal places to begin looking for a permanent position. Some training centers also offer career placement immediately after graduation.

Craniosacral Massage - The Benefits

Craniosacral massage is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of the craniosacral system.

It is a form of healing therapy, we look at the benefits of craniosacral massage and examine the benefits of it in more detail.

What is the Craniosacral System?

The Craniosacral system is a physiological system like the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and provides the physical environment in which the brain and spinal cord develop and function.

The membranes and cerebrospinal fluid of the craniosacral system surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.

Craniosacral Massage therapy deals with the bones of the head, spinal column, sacrum and the underlying structures.

This type of massage employs a very light touch and uses specifically designed techniques to release restrictions and compression in these areas.

Craniosacral Massage – How Does it Work?

Craniosacral massage taps into the inherent wisdom of the body which allows it to heal itself where possible.

The craniosacral system has a rhythm that can be felt throughout the body. Craniosacral massage therapists use a very light, soft touch to monitor this rhythm and pinpoint sources of obstruction and stress in the body.

Once located the therapist will assist the natural movement and release of the restriction to help the body self correct.

Craniosacral massage therapy can be used to treat childhood conditions such as poor sleep, restlessness, colic and ear infections.

It is a gentle and non-invasive therapy and can be used to treat babies while they are asleep.

Craniosacral Massage – Is it safe for Everyone?

Craniocascral massage is safe if performed for the right condition.

As with most massage treatments there are some medical conditions that are contra indicated and craniosacral massage should not be recommended.

These include conditions where a variation and/or slight increase in intracranial pressure would cause instability.

Acute aneurysm, cerebral hemorrhage or other pre-existing severe bleeding disorders are examples of conditions that could be affected by small intracranial pressure changes.

It is advisable to consult your medical practitioner before embarking on a course of treatment.

Craniosacral Massage – What are the Benefits?

Due to its influence on the functioning of the central nervous system, craniosacral massage benefits the body in a number of ways.

It is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease and alleviate a wide range of specific medical conditions including:

• Chronic back and neck pain

• Headache

• Tension

• Migraine

• Autism

• Chronic Fatigue

• Post traumatic stress disorder

• Emotional difficulties

Craniosacral massage has also proved effective in treating stress related dysfunctions and various sensory disorders.
What Happens during a Session?

As with most massage treatment, craniosacral massage usually takes place in a quiet, private setting.
During the massage you will remain fully clothed and it is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing. Most people choose to remove their shoes.

You will be asked to recline on a massage couch or treatment table. The practitioner sits or stands and
will move around between the client's head, torso and feet.

Some therapists may use a light organic oil to facilitate the massage.

Finding a qualified therapist

To get the best results from a craniosacral massage, seek out a suitably trained and qualified therapist who you feel comfortable with.

More and more massage therapists and osteopaths are incorporating some craniosacral massage techniques into their treatments and you should find craniosacral massage available at spas, salons and healthclubs.

• With your index finger and thumbs gently pull along the brow bone. Repeat three times.

• Stroke gently over the eyelids with your ring fingers from the inner to the outer corners. Repeat three times.

• Alternately stroke down the nose with your thumbs then gently rub round the nose tip and nostrils. Be careful not to press hard on the nostrils.

• Stroke the cheeks across the cheekbones and gradually work down the face to the chin.

• Make little circular movements across the top lip. When you reach the corner of the mouth lift slightly then repeat.

• Make pinching movements out along the jawline and up towards the ears.

• Rub the earlobes between your fingers and thumbs then gently pinch all around the outer ear. Most people love this.

• Sweep your hands up the neck and on to the cheeks. Hold then repeat.

• Finish by stroking the forehead, getting lighter and lighter until you bring your hands off.

Note: Face massage should be done by using oil or moisturizer as a lubricant. If you just use your bare hands, you may cause too much friction and leads to irritation of the skin.

Swedish Massage Tips

Swedish massage is a bodywork technique that works on the deeper muscles of the body. The practitioner uses long flowing strokes, kneading, and circular movements that normally follows the blood stream to the heart. Swedish massage will also help to increase the bodies circulation.

The five main strokes of Swedish massage:

* Petrissage: kneading motions.
* Friction: uses circular motions.
* Effleurage: deeper penetration by using the thumbs.
* Tapotement: a rhythmic drumming, using the edge of the palm and heel of the hand.
* Vibration: rapidly shaking.

When giving a massage therapy the practitioner will usually apply cream, oil or a lotion to the skin in order to reduce the friction and help towards smoother strokes. Swedish massage is the most popular, widely used and well known of all the massaging techniques.

Swedish massage application:

The first thing to do is to create a comfortable and relaxing environment, that should be free of the possibility of any interruption from distractions like children or pets. Make sure the temperature of the room is mildly warm, and you should create proper lighting by dimming the lights or using only candlelight to enhanced the effect, also maybe try lighting aromatherapy candles.

Next, get the client to lie down on your massage table and make sure that all of their muscles are adequately supported. If you don't have a professional designed table, you can always use a firm mattress or a futon. You should be prepared, in that you should have all the required tools ready, such as hand towels and oils. Oils are especially crucial, as they are not only used to relax the client but also to help make smoother strokes on the body.

Once you have all of your materials ready and you are ready to start the Swedish massage, you should always begin by focusing on the larger muscle groups first, such as the neck, shoulders, back, and legs. For the maximum and most relaxing effect, you might want to start at the shoulders, and work from there to the neck, and then down the arms and onto the hands. You can then return to the upper and lower back, working your way down to the thighs and calves, and ending with the feet. However, its also important to realize that you should also follow your intuition when giving a Swedish massage treatment.

The three main strokes used in a Swedish massage therapy are the effleurage, the fan stroke, and the circling hands. Effleurage is applied using soft and fluid strokes with the palm of the hand, the fan stroke is done by sliding your hands up the shoulder blades and then over the shoulders, down to the lower back, so that you are basically following a coarse to the heart, and lastly the circling hands, which is applied by making counterclockwise circular motions with your fingers, which should always pointing in the same direction.

In conclusion, if the life style you are living is leaving you tired, stressed, and full of aches and pains, then making a appointment with your local Swedish massage practitioner, would be the best thing you could do. You will definitely feel more relaxed and vitalized.

Give Back Massage A Try

Have you ever had a first-class shoulder rub; you know how great it can feel. This is why massage techniques have developed into a science of their own over the years, as a culmination of hybrids of Eastern and Western philosophies in physical therapy and other medical treatments. You don't need to have a lot of experience to enjoy giving a massage to someone. If you're looking for a means to enjoy the relaxation of a massage at home, try learning to give and receive a back massage.

Why Massage the Back?

Back massages are great for a number of reasons. First, the back itself makes an easy plateau to work with, containing broad muscle groups that often carry a lot of anxiety due to poor posture or unnecessary strains from improperly lifting heavy items. It is also hard to give yourself a back massage, so be ready to give if you want to receive a good back massage.

A massage can improve the circulation, which stimulates the immune system, encourages the body to flush out impurities, and promotes proper posture. However, a good massage will bring not only physical relaxation, but emotional well being also. Taking the time out to share a massage with your spouse or loved one can be a bonding experience that will strengthen your relationship.

Where do I Learn?

Learning how to give a back massage can be as easy as lightly rubbing up and down on a back with your palms. But if you want to get the most out of the massage time, you can learn some of the proper techniques to give the most effective massage. Your local bookstore should have resources that detail different back massage techniques. For those who want to take learning a step further, you could seek out a massage school and find out if they give basic lessons. Learning to give a proper back massage is valuable, not just for improving your massage technique, but for avoiding potentially dangerous things that you can do to someone during a back massage.

A Word of Caution

As mentioned, while it's straightforward to give an effortless back massage that relaxes, it's also very easy to use incorrect techniques causing injury to your massage partner. Because of this, no matter how basic a back massage you intend to give, you should know some things to avoid. Never put direct pressure on the spine, because it's a delicate area and the wrong pressure can cause pain or even injury.

Likewise, if the person you intend to massage has any scrapes, bruises, or blisters on his back, stay away from that area. Friction over such spots can lead to further injury, and that's the opposite of what you're trying to get out of a back massage. For the best results, find someone to teach you good techniques, and you'll learn how to give a appropriate back massage without causing injury.

Massage Your Way To Crohns Relaxation

The mind is a powerful tool that can help you overcome physical suffering if you know how to use it. However, not everyone can benefit from guided imagery. Therefore, it’s not a bad idea to explore other forms of alternative and complimentary treatment such as massage therapy to help bring some Crohn’s relaxtion.

What is massage therapy? Massage therapy is the method of applying various pressure techniques to the body’s muscular structure and soft tissues, in order to improve various systems in the body including the musculoskeletal, circulatory-lymphatic and nervous systems.

The most common massage techniques include applying stationary or moveable pressure, kneading, holding, rocking, friction or vibration. These techniques are usually applied with the hands, but the elbows, forearms or feet can also be used.

General message therapy benefits – Massage therapy offers many physical and mental benefits that may include:

- Full body relaxation
- Relieves tight, aching and tired muscles
- Increases range of motion and flexibility
- Calms the nervous system
- Lowers heart rate and blood pressure
- Relieves chronic pain
- Helps speed recovery from illness and injury
- Strengthening of the immune system
- Helps one achieve mental relaxation
- Encourages goodnight sleep
- Alleviates tension headaches
- Reduces stress.

How does massage therapy benefit Crohn’s sufferers? Studies, conducted on massage therapy as treatment for Crohn’s disease symptoms, found that massage therapy can have a powerful and positive effect on the emotional distress that is psychologically caused by the condition. Stress plays an integral role in Crohn’s disease symptoms. Stress has been know to make Crohn’s symptoms worse, which often results in pain and in some cases even more serious conditions that require hospitalization and can lead to death.

Massage therapy has also provided many Crohn’s sufferers relief from pain, and also reduces the frequency of attacks.

Different types of massages. There a diverse number of massage techniques that can be combined or used separately depending on the needs of the individual. For those with Crohn’s disease, some massage therapies that may be used include but are not limited to:

Swedish massage – This is the most common massage used in North America and is characterized by long smooth motions, kneading or applying friction to the surface of the muscles. This type of massage encourages overall relaxation, improves circulation, and relieves tension within the muscles.

Deep tissue massage – This massage involves the use of deep slow stroking motions, friction, or direct pressure to the muscles. Intense pressure is applied for this massage to penetrate deeper into the muscles. It helps relieve chronic muscle tension.

Neuromuscular massage – This massage focuses on the deep penetration of individual muscles. Its purpose is to increase blood flow and release knots of tension that exist in muscles connected to other areas of the body where pain is present. The release of this muscle tension often reduces painful symptoms.

Acupressure – this is a massage-like therapy similar to acupuncture. However, pressure is applied to the specific points within the acupuncture meridians with the finger or thumb, and not with acupuncture needles. Like neuromuscular massage, acupressure is designed to help relieve painful symptoms and also works to bring balance to the body and mind.

If you are considering massage therapy, seek treatment from a qualified massage therapist who has experience treating inflammatory bowel disease symptoms. Since you are seeking relief from Crohn’s symptoms, you need to find someone who understands how to use different massage techniques and applies the right amount of pressure. For instance, applying too much pressure can cause the body to tense, while not enough pressure will lead to insufficient results. Thus, each person receiving massage therapy needs to be accessed differently.

To find a skilled massage therapist that specializes in crohn’s relaxtion ask your health care provider, a physiotherapist, your local hospital, check the yellow pages or conduct a search online.

How To Massage Migraine Headaches

Massage, a common method of relieving migraine headaches, can be done by a professional – or you can do it yourself using this technique.

A light massage combined with migraine pressure points will give you the greatest relief. You need only a few simple points about how to massage a migraine headache.

Migraine Pressure Point Defined

It is important to learn the migraine pressure point or points that bring relief. A migraine pressure point is a point on your body that, when pressed, will lessen the pain in your head. Surprisingly, a migraine pressure point is not necessarily the point that hurts most.

A migraine pressure point may be pressed and released in slow, rhythmical fashion, and deliberately massaged to gain relief. This will release congested energy and blood from the head and ease your pain.

Migraine Pressure Point Technique

You will be treating each migraine pressure point with these simple steps.

* Use only the pads of your thumbs or first two fingers – never the ends.
* Keep the pressure light to moderate, depending on how sensitive the point is to your touch.
* Press hard enough so you can feel hardness or tension under your thumb or fingers.
* If a migraine pressure point hurts so much that you can’t take a deep breath, apply less pressure on that point.
* Let your fingers sink into the migraine pressure point as you apply pressure gradually. Feel your thumb or finger going gently, gradually deeper and deeper.
* While your thumb or finger is as deep as you want to go, massage the point with tiny, circular movements of your finger.
* Keep your thumb or finger on the migraine pressure point until you feel a movement or change there. It may feel softer or warmer.
* Now slowly, gradually release the migraine pressure point until your thumb or finger leaves the skin.
* Repeat several times at same point.

Migraine Pressure Point Locations

Remember to be firm, but gentle. Insufficient pressure on a migraine pressure point will not be effective – too much pressure will create tension in your surrounding muscles.

Here are a few migraine pressure point locations to get you started. Start with the first, and work your way through each point, consciously relaxing as you do so.

1. Migraine Pressure Point at Base of Skull

Locate the bony base of your skull in back. Place your thumb pads under the skull’s base, each thumb about 1 inch from your spinal column. Holding your thumbs against the two points, tilt your head back slightly. Now press upward gradually, counting to 10, and breathing deeply as you do so. When you reach the deepest point, massage with tiny, circular motions of the thumbs, still holding the pressure. When you feel a change in the point, slowly release the pressure, counting to 10 again. Repeat 5 times.

2. Migraine Pressure Point at Mid-Forehead

This migraine pressure point is located at the middle of your forehead, right between your eyebrows. Using the migraine pressure point technique described above, and your thumbs or one of the first two fingers, press inward gradually, counting to 10, and breathing deeply as you do so. When you reach the deepest point, massage with tiny, circular motions, still holding the pressure. As you feel a change in the point, slowly release the pressure, counting to 10 as you do so. Repeat 10 times.

3. Migraine Pressure Point at Eye Corners

Feel the face at the outer corners of your eyes. Move your fingers away from the eyes until you find the spots just behind the bone. Using the migraine pressure point technique and one or two finger pads, apply pressure gradually inward, counting to 10, and breathing deeply as you do so. When you reach the deepest point, massage with tiny, circular motions, still holding the pressure. As you feel a change in the point, slowly release the pressure, counting to 10 as you do so. Repeat 10 times.

4. Migraine Pressure Point on Hand

Surprisingly, you have a migraine pressure point on each hand. It’s the fleshy part between your thumb and index finger. Using the thumb pad and index finger of your opposite hand, gradually squeeze the upper portion of this migraine pressure point, counting to 10 and breathing deeply. When you reach the deepest point, massage with tiny, circular motions, still holding the pressure. As you feel a change in the point, slowly release the pressure, counting to 10 as you do so. Repeat 10 times.

5. Migraine Pressure Point on Foot

The last point you will use to massage migraine headaches away is located on the top of each foot. Locate the place where the bones come together between your big toe and your second toe. With thumb or finger pads, press downward gradually, counting to 10, and breathing deeply as you do so. When you reach the deepest point, massage with tiny, circular motions, still holding the pressure. As you feel a change in the point, slowly release the pressure, counting to 10 again. Repeat 10 times.

Different bodies respond differently to pressure points. These should work for you. If you want information on additional migraine pressure points, ask a local shiatsu professional. A professional will also be able to give you a complete treatment for relief or prevention of migraine headaches.

How to Give a Relieving Foot Massage – Step by Step

This article will help you to learn how to give a relieving foot massage. Before you begin massage check that your hands are clean and your nails fairly short with no jagged edged. Take off any rings if you wear them.

Foot massage step by step

Your feet are probably the most neglected part of your bodies. They definitely deserve a loving massage from time to time. Make sure your partner is warm and comfortable. Uncover one foot by folding back the towel or blanket. Now pour a little of your chosen oil into the palm of one hand. Rub your hands together to evenly distribute the oil. Now you are ready to begin.

1. Enclose the foot between hands (one on top, one underneath), then gently slide your hands off the foot coming forward to the toes. This movement should be slow and soothing. Repeat four or five times.

2. Gently circle around the ankle using your thumbs. This area can be tender, so go easy.

3. Rub over the top of the foot with your thumbs in little circles, coming down from the ankle area to the toes. Repeat three or four times.

4. Now rub each toe the same little circular movements.

5. Rotate each toe twice in each direction.

6. Gently pull each toe between finger and thumbs.

7. Zigzag down the sole of the foot from toes to heel with your thumbs overlapped.

8. Enclose the foot in your hands then rub them in opposite directions, to create frictions. This is very warming.

9. Hold the foot firmly and slowly rotate the ankle clockwise then anti-clockwise. Repeat a couple of times.

10. Repeat step 1.

Once completed, wrap the foot up again for warmth and repeat the movements on the other foot. By now your massage partner will be feeling more relaxed and at ease with your touch.

How-To Give A Fantastic Full Body Massage

Here’s some tips on how to give a great, full body massage.

Turn off the computer, take the phone off the hook and dim the lights. Spark up some scented candles and turn on a little soft music. Grab a couple of sheets or soft towels – one for your work space and one to cover your ‘client’. This is important because as skin is massaged, it causes blood flow into that area and that blow flow in turn, warms the skin. So in order to avoid a chill, cover up the areas that you’re finished massaging. Also, because working on muscles causes all sorts of chemicals to be released into the body, many people feel thirsty after a massage so have some water on hand.

* Make sure to only massage muscle – no stretching of the skin or digging into bone and organs. Remember that massages are for muscles below the skin - not for the skin itself.

* Massage the large muscle groups of the body which are basically the neck, back, shoulders and legs. This way, aside from massaging correctly, you’re getting at the areas that store tension in the body.

* Use firm, even pressure, not too hard or forceful. Pressure that is too light or inconsistent, can be as uncomfortable as too much pressure so be sure to use an even degree.

* Always use a lubricant because they help to prepare and protect the skin.

1. Begin the full body massage at the shoulders by kneading the muscles and gently pulling them towards you.

2. Work across the shoulders to the neck using your thumbs and the tips of your fingers to work from the muscles, across and down the upper back. Watch your nails!

3. Work down each arm separately finding the muscle groups in the front and back and kneading them gently. When you get to the hands, use your thumbs to work the palms. Don't forget the other arm!

4. Return to the upper back and work downwards to the middle of the back using your thumbs and fingertips to work from the center out and pushing upward.

5. Continue working down the back to the hips.

6. Massage the muscles of the upper thighs and down the back of the legs to the calves spending time kneading each one separately with both hands.

7. Move to the foot, start with the heel and hold it firmly while pushing up toward the leg, then down and side-to-side. Work your thumbs on the under side of the foot with deep, slow pressure and also the balls of the feet and in between the toes.

If you’re subject’s asleep – you did a great job!

Ice Massage: Muscle Building Secret

If you are serious about building muscle then you also need to be serious about your recovery. There are a lot of workout tips out there, but enhancing your recovery is one of the best muscle building secrets.

If you have been training hard then it is likely that you have experienced muscle soreness following exercise. If you have been exercising consistently for several years it is also likely that you have some chronic muscle related pain that was caused by years of using the same muscles over and over again.

Luckily, there is a simple solution that works very well for enhancing recovery, relieving soreness, and alleviating chronic muscle pains. This solution is ice massage, also known as cryo-massage.

This is simply a massaging of the muscle with a piece of ice. To perform ice massage the simplest way is to fill a small Dixie cup with water and freeze it. You can then peel-away the cup to expose the ice. Hold the unpeeled end in your hand and massage the desired area. There are also special plastic cups created just for this purpose if you don’t mind a small investment.

It is best to use long, deep strokes over the entire length of the muscle. Make sure not to simply rub the ice on the surface of your skin, but to apply some downward pressure as you go over the length of the muscle.

Ice massage is best used immediately post-exercise. A duration of 10-15 minutes is usually sufficient.

The ice will reduce inflammation and increase blood flow to the massaged area, which often times completely prevents any muscle soreness. In addition, the massaging action helps to breakdown muscle adhesions which may be causing chronic muscle pain or tightness.

I find that ice massage is one of the most powerful recovery tools available. Because of this you may be tempted to use ice massage after every workout. But like any recovery method, if you use ice massage too often it will begin to lose its effectiveness.

For this reason I recommend reserving ice massage for only your toughest workouts. This means that it should be used once per week at most.

Give ice massage a try after your next workout. I think you will find that it significantly reduces your recovery time between workouts and may help you deal with some of the chronic muscle pains you experience.

Please remember that although ice massage is one of the best muscle building secrets, without a properly designed training and nutrition program you will find that the results are minimal.

How to Massage a Baby?

Massage is very helpful for the healthy development of bones of your baby. It also strengthens the bonds between you and your baby. Pediatric research has shown that babies born prematurely make much quicker progress when given regular massage.

The best time to massage your baby is just after his or her bath when he or she is not feeling hungry or irritable. Make sure the room is nice and warm and perhaps perfume it gently with a vaporizer and one of the relaxing aromatherapy oils.

You will find it easiest to work sitting on the floor, legs outstretched with the baby lying on your legs. This means he or she is reassured by the warmth of your skin. Make sure you feel comfortable before you start and if necessary, prop yourself up with a couple of cushions.

You need to remove any jewelry and warm your hands and the oil prior to massage. Use a blend of 4 fl oz (100 ml) of sweet almond oil to which you have added two drops of any of the following - camomile oil, rose oil, lavender oil, neroli oil. Now you are ready to begin.

Baby massage step by step

• Start with your baby lying against your legs on his or her back so he or she can look up at you.
• Stroke gently down his arms then his legs, repeating each movement five or six times.
• Circle round his tummy using the flat of your hand in an anti clockwise direction (this is very calming),
• Stretch out his toes one by one then gently rub over the soles of his feet using your thumb.
• Uncurl his fingers then gently move each one clockwise then anti clockwise. Now rub over the palms of his hands with your thumb.

Turn your baby over to lie on his tummy against your legs.

• Gently rub a little oil into his back, bottom, legs and feet using long light strokes.
• Stroke down his back giving a little squeeze at the buttocks. Repeat five or six times.
• Gently stroke round his shoulders down his arms and off at his hands.
• Gently stroke down his legs several times. Each time finish by giving his legs a little stretch by pulling gently at the ankles.
• Finish by stroking gently down his back and legs in one movement. Repeat, getting lighter with each stroke, until your hand just glides over your baby without actually touching him.

Gently turn your baby on to his back so he can see you again.

• Gently stroke a little oil (the surplus on your hands should be enough) on to his face. Lightly stroke up his forehead several times.
• With your thumbs stroke across his cheeks then down his nose and chin. Do each movement several times.
• Gently squeeze and rub his ear lobes between your fingers and thumb.
• Finish off with a connecting stroke. With one hand cradling your baby’s head, stroke gently down his body with the other and bring it to rest on top of his feet. Hold this position (one hand on the head, the other on the feet) for a count of ten. Gently release and lift off your hands.

Should You Invest In A Massage Recliner?

A massage recliner is being advertised. You would love to be the person in the image, the person that gets to come home, sit down in the chair and just melt away all of the stresses from the day. Yet, as a smart consumer, you also realize the importance of paying attention to what you are purchasing. The question is, then, is a massage recliner really something that can improve your life? There are many times when this answer is yes! But, to get to that, you’ll need to understand a bit more about these units.

Most massage recliners are designed to be a recliner style chair that is comfortable just to sit in. But, when you turn it on, you may find that it has a vibration to it which occurs due to the electric motors that are within it. In addition, some offer heating elements that will gently apply heat to your body as you relax. Most importantly for a massage chair is the ability to provide you with some tool that will move over you back and legs to generate a massage like feel. Usually these are plastic rollers.

A massage recliner will provide several key benefits to you. First, they are a good tool for stress reduction. They also can help your muscles to improve and repair from what you’ve put them through over the course of the day. In addition, many offer benefits like increasing the circulation of your blood and pain relief techniques.

When purchasing one, take the time to test them out to insure that they provide the overall experience that you are looking for. A mid range price is usually the best way to go. The massage recliner that’s specifically designed for your body’s needs is the one you really want to find.

Massage Techniques: What’s The Difference?

If you take a look around the web, you’ll quickly find that there are many different massage techniques that you can learn and do. Why there are different techniques and what difference really does it make for you to get one massage instead of another? Although it may sound confusing when you just want someone to give you a massage to get rid of the tension that you feel, these different massage techniques all have their own benefits to your body. Each offers something that’s a bit more unique than the next.

For example, consider acupressure. This type of massage is one that has been used for hundreds of years, dating well back into ancient Chinese medicines. Pressure is applied to the areas of your body that are causing blockage of the blood flow, or life blood, of the body. The Qi, as it is called, is said to be blocked from flowing through the body which then causes ailments. By restoring this flow, it improves your overall health and well being.

In other types of massage techniques, the goal is different. Some will stimulate healing in the muscle groups so as to improve the recovery time after a long workout. Others will improve your immune system, aid in muscle growth and still others are helpful for other reasons. Each offers something different than the last.

When it comes to choosing the right massage techniques you’ll want to talk with your massage provider to find out what they recommend for you. You may also have specific preferences for some type of massage. You may not like the pressure of a deep tissue massage, for example. Talk to the person giving you your massage. Find out what they believe is the right massage technique for your needs and your desires so as to provide you with the amount of relaxing you need.

Foot Massage Tips: Getting The Most From It

Giving a foot massage is something that anyone can do. If you’ve never tried to give someone one, or you are not satisfied with the type of massage that you get yourself, take into consideration these tips. Believe it or not, many massages can be done with just a bit of practice with excellent results. You don’t have to pay for a very costly massage to enjoy them every day. Follow these tips to improve yours.

• Don’t forget the lower leg. Many of the muscles in the leg connect to the ankle and then the foot. That means that the entire muscle should be worked to get the benefits that you will enjoy

• Use your finger tips. Instead of using your entire hand or using all of your fingers, you’ll want to make sure to use just your fingertips. Use your thumb and your finger tips to work into the muscles for more noticeable results.

• Rotate your ankles. Roll your ankle from side to side to let the joint loosen. Then, rotate your feet clockwise and then back again several times. This will help to fully relax the joint and the muscles that make it work.

• Use oils. Don’t be afraid to use massage oils. These can help to stimulate your blood vessels and they work as aromatherapy, too, helping you to relax and enjoy the foot massage that you are getting.

• Knead your feet. Another trick to really enjoying your foot massage is to knead your muscles. Use your hand in a fist by rubbing your knuckles into the muscles.

In The Market For Massage Equipment

Massage equipment is something that everyone who gives massages is in the market for. Just as with any trade the right equipment is needed in order for the practitioner is to be successful. Look into any business and you will see that a carpenter needs a hammer, a plumber needs a wrench and a chef needs pans. Such is the case for a massage therapist. In many cases a table and oils are the essential items that will be needed by a good massage therapist. However there may be other needs that need to be filled. In most cases the therapist will need a place to conduct their business and well adequate facilities with which to work. In other words a big piece of equipment that many do not think about is an actual place to perform the work. Look into renting and leasing space so as to have a place to work from.

In regards to the table one needs to look into what type of massages that they will be performing as well as how often. The table needs to be durable as well as comfortable for the recipient to be laying on in order for business to succeed. You do not want to be using a table that was found in someone’s garage or bought at a flea market without thoroughly checking it out first. Not all tables are made the same. Look up reviews of the specific tables online and find out if it is the item that will meet your needs. Look at load limits, comfort and portability, if you plan to do house calls. Do not forget to look into your lotion stock as well and determine your needs before going to work. You do not want to go in to do a massage only to discover that the product you need you are out of. Look into possibly working out a deal with a distributor if you buy the product in bulk. Not everyone will offer this, but shop around and see what it is that they can do for you.

One should also consider the warranty that is included in the product that you will be using in regards to tables and lotions. Also look into a laundry service for the number of towels that you will be going through. This can have many benefits as you will always have clean towels, but it may also be very costly. So consider the benefits versus the drawbacks when looking into something like this. Look into all aspects of your equipment as well as safety and cost for yourself and your clients to get the most out of your business. Remember that you will be able to get the most out of something if you know what you are getting in the first place and are not just settling on whatever is cheapest. Do your research and find what will work best for you and your business, not just looking at the initial bottom line, but looking at the bottom line of the future.

Where To Look For Massage Therapy Education

If you want to learn how to give a massage then you will be in need of massage therapy education. There are schools all over the country that can make you into a certified massage therapist. It is something that you need to actually attend, much like college or taking vocational classes in order to be certified and to be able to practice the art of giving a massage. There are many locations who only work in the teachings of how to properly use massage therapy where as some traditional colleges and universities also teach the skill and art of the massage. It is growing in popularity as a field of study and as a profession hence leading to more schools and more of a demand for massage therapists.

Many of these schools also offer teachings in other healing arts as well. Some of these range from acupuncture to herbal remedies. These schools take the time to teach and certify their students in the ability to become a professional massage therapist and with the high levels of stress that there are in the world today, more and more people are finding themselves in the need of a therapeutic massage. Massages can be wonderful things if they are performed correctly and by someone who is actually certified in the field. Not all of us have the ability or the know how to accomplish this feat, however with some training and about six months worth of school you could be a certified massage therapist. This is not a joke, this is a real recognized profession in which many people have the potential to make large amounts of money if they perform properly and fulfill their customer’s needs.

There are many different styles and types of massage therapy education places that you can choose from. Many of these are actual accredited colleges and universities which offer programs in the field of massage therapy. There are many others that do not fall into this category. These would be schools that are specialized in the art of massage therapy or they are schools that practice the idea of healing practices. Some of these schools are well known and have produced some very capable massage therapists; others are schools that are only looking to find people who are willing to pay to learn massage therapy and are not concerned about student success. In most cases it is best to check with the Better Business Bureau in order to find out if any complaints have been filed against the school that you are looking into so that you will not end up coming out empty handed in the end.

All in all consider if this is a field that you would like to get into and whether or not it is something that you believe that you will be able to do. Once you have determined that this is the life that you would like to live then you need to pick a school and get your certification so that you will be able to go out and provide the massage therapy that so many people need today.
